GUNS AND EASEL

An Art Gallery of Jasprit Gujral

Artist1.jpg

THE ARTIST

An  enemy occupied cliff or an innocent looking blank canvas resting on an easel - both can stretch the fibre of one's soul to a dangerous tipping over point into insanity.

I feel privileged that Almighty gave me an opportunity to face both. I feel even more privileged that He gave me courage to face these  ethically and aesthetically. I still feel sane and living life near normal.

Armed with an AK 47 and a brush, I was astride two wild horses - if 8PM to 3AM was night operations in jungles, 3 AM onwards it was battle on the canvas. I dared to dream and live two lives in parallel. Having acquired a formal education in art early on in my Army life, I started working aggressively with various mediums, materials and concepts. The obsession with art resulted in me having created large number of works on varied themes from local flora fauna to pure abstraction. I have  showcased my works in Fifteen Solo Shows in various metros over a period of as many years.

The guiding rule all through has been - "When in battle fight like a warrior and when facing a canvas paint like a warrior".

WORD IN THE ART CIRCLE

A thinking, musing soul, identifying itself with eternal forms. The artist thus hopes to break the routine of a smug world. Oh certainly, a fast beating pulse we have over here, in him, and so three cheers are in order!

The deep philosophical and spiritual bend that you see in the works of Jaspreet Gujral comes from the very life itself; perhaps when he stands naked in soul before an art loving public, Jaspreet does not want to speak about his life at all. He only wants to tell the audience what life has given to him, the experiences and the visions.

COLONEL'S BRUSH WITH ART

Developing India Mirror

"Painting – an artistic pursuit where the sole limit is one's own imagination – and soldiering, a rough-and-tough no-nonsense profession embedded in glorious tradition and governed by cast-iron discipline; seem to have absolutely nothing in common but, in the indomitable spirit of the Indian Army, Col Jaspreet Gujral – decorated with the Sena Medal – has succeeded in deftly combining these two vastly-divergent spheres. In fact, the officer wields his service weapon and the brush with equal elan!"
